DARK ALLEY, TORONTO

When I took this picture I was not sure what the result would be. It was very dark and I had no tripod, so I simply increased the ISO to 1600. yes of course I did get a lot of grain or I should say noise but I was amazed at the detail in the image. I also promised to give more information about our visit to the David Bowie exhibit at the AGO. It is a wonderful show, which you should see and experience if you get a chance to go to Toronto. You are not allowed to take pictures otherwise I certainly would have posted an image.

Hi Mike,
Great shot! I happen to like the grain/noise. I cannot figure out the aversion to grain or noise that a lot of photographers have today. I used to love shooting ASA 3200 film for the added grain. Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the comments. Yes Bob it was done with my new little Leica D-Lux 6. You might have noticed that the last few images I shot in a panoramic mode. This camera has a simple switch which allows you to quickly change format, from square to panoramic.Very neat. Yes I agree with you Dave, why the aversion to noise or what we called grain in a photograph. It simply can be a very interesting element in an image. In the fifties and sixties grain was de rigueur. Photographers like sam Haskins, Ed van der Elsken and Tony Armstrong Jones, better known as Lord Snowdon, made grain an important part of their pictures.

I know I say this all the time, but this one is GORGEOUS. Surreal, arty. This would look glorious blown up and framed.

Great shot, Mike.
I agree that the David Bowie exhibit was well worth the price of admission.
My daughter and myself saw it just this past Wednesday. Interesting to note the many, many people in my age group who were happily reliving a moment in their musical past. You could tell by the knowing smiles on their faces and the tapping of their feet!
