WINTER PANORAMA, NORTH BAY

It was the visual prominence of the fences  fences which made for a nice composition in this panorama. I simply stitched two images together get this Winter impression.

FENCES, NORTH BAY

On my walk this afternoon, I made this picture of some backyards. I liked the pattern of the fences and combined  the various coloured surfaces made an interesting  cityscape.

OLD HOUSE, ELM STREET, TORONTO

In some of my earlier postings I talked about the paintings of Albert Franck so it was quite a surprise to see this old house, looking like some archeological remnant right out of a Franck painting. All the old homes around it have been transformed into restaurants, bar or some kind of business. This house still looks like an old home, which of course it is not any more. It is simply waiting to be restored to another eating establishment.

TREE, McMICHAEL GALLERY

On our trip, we visited the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg where we saw a great show on the tree, titled "The Tree: Form and Substance" It is a show well worth the visit. Included in the show are some great photographs, so if you are near Kleinburg definitely make a trip to the gallery.

CITY ART

I just enjoy wandering around cities. It is visually stimulating so my images reflect that interest.

ICEFOLLIES 2012, NORTH BAY

The Winter art festival Icefollies here in North bay was a rather disappointing event. Only five pieces were exhibited at the waterfront with one project not even finished,so basically four final pieces were on show.

FLIGHTSTOP, TORONTO EATON CENTRE

Last saturday morning walking through the Eaton Centre, I could not resist photographing Michael Snow's major installation "Flightstop" Yes I know it has been photographed a zillion times but it is such a Canadian iconic artwork that I simply could not resist taking this picture.

SUMAC

No recognizable shape, no centre of interest just simply pattern. After my walk through the Winter landscape I liked the bright red colour of the sumac seed pods. When I looked at my images on the computer I prefered the abstract quality of this particular picture. The picture reminds me of this lithograph by the Quebec artist Jean Paul Riopelle

OFFICE BUILDINGS, DOWNTOWN TORONTO

A colour image today. Its snowing and grey so I thought it would be nice to see colour on my blog. I took this picture last weekend in downtown Toronto and liked the result. It reminds me more of a super realist painting than a photograph. It is however a straight photograph made with my Canon G11.

BROOKFIELD PLACE, TORONTO

The exhibition "Migrating Landscapes" is at the Allen Lambert Galleria located inside the Brookfield Place, which is an office complex formerly the BCE Place. It is a very beautiful design which has incorporated an old 19th century bank facade. I preferred the toned black and white image. The colour picture lacked the strong graphic impact of the monotone image.

MIGRATING LANDSCAPES

During our weekend trip to Toronto, we discovered a very interesting exhibition called "Migrating Landscapes". It is Canada's Official entry at the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture. Using wood and videos , young canadian architects designed a modular 'new landscape'. It definitely is worth seeing. By the way the exhibition is at the Brookfield Place in Toronto. It was difficult to photograph. because I did not have tripod with me I had to take my pictures handheld so I increased the ISO quite a bit. This in turn gave me some noise but all in all I did get the images I was looking for.

WINTER, HWY 400

Last night we returned from a  fieldtrip with students and faculty from the Nipissing University Fine Arts department to Toronto. It was a great trip, even though I did not take many pictures we visited some great exhibitions at the AGO and the McMichael gallery in Kleinburg. On the way I experimented with my iPad and made a few interesting images. This week I will post a few pictures I managed to take during the few days in Toronto.

OLD RED GARAGE

You are correct david I am trying different approaches to make my images visually slightly different. I see myself and of course other photographers as printmakers. So doing my series on North Bay I gave this picture the look of an old picture and then simply add colour to part of. This creates a visual contrast not only in tonal and colour values but also in time.

ABSTRACT

Surprisingly this image looks like an abstract painting but it actually is cracked pavement. I photographed it this morning on my daily walkabout in the city. The white is simply salt  along the cracks. Of course I played around with the picture in Photoshop but I simply used a variety of blending modes with different layers to get this final effect.

WAITING FOR SPRING

I noticed these signs behind a construction trailer ready to be used as soon as the Winter ends and road construction can start again. The red and orange shaped formed a nice abstract pattern.

LITTLE MONSTERS BUS

You are absolutely correct David. Malls are very empty and lonely places. I think cathy said it too very sad and lonely. So for both of you I post this image of the same mall.

MALL PARK

I first thought about naming this picture " Mall Landscape" but I decided that it resembled a park. What a desolate and sad place. But I could not resist making an image of this empty artificial landscape.

SQUEEZED

This image symbolizes what is happening to our natural world. Nature  is  very quickly being destroyed by human habitat and wasteful activities. Of course I am certain the tree grew after these houses were built but I like the symbolism of this picture.

RED FENCE

Not a great spectacular landscape but just a urban backyard. What attracted me of course was the red fence superimposed by the bare branches of the shrubs in the foreground. The red fence ads a nice contrast to the wintery scene.
