MORE ABOUT THE SHELL

I can't resist posting another image of the small shell. When you start looking at a, on the surface, simple object like this one, you discover the complexity of textures and shapes.

SHELL

It is a cold and snowy day so I decided to stay in and make some images of a few shell I have sitting on a shelf in my room here. I liked this one because of the sculptural quality of this particular one. Its not very big , only about five centimeters in length but it has a very nice rough textural surface.

PERTH, ONTARIO

One of my favourite places in Ontario is Perth. I think if you enjoy architecture, you definitely should visit this historical town in Eastern Ontario. You will find beautifully preserved buildings from the middle of the nineteenth century till the end of the twentieth. No restraint in the design of this building. I simply liked the opulence and the flouting of wealth. So not great from an  architectural viewpoint but fun to see.

CAUGHT

Sometimes you take a photograph which, at first glance, does not look as promising as you initially thought. I took this picture in Perth just a few weeks ago. It definitely did not work in colour but in black and white had potential. I simply put it aside and after some time started to play with the image and made changes for a greater visual impact. It reminds me of a butterfly caught in an enclosed space looking for a way out.

FRIENDS GATHER HERE

I could not resistposting this image. You will find this washroom at The Moon Café in Mattawa. We spent a very enjoyable few hours on our last photo trip to Mattawa and if you go to Rob's blog, "Northern Perspectives", you will find a few more images with more info on this delightful establishment.

LOG BUILDING, ASHTON, ON

Like Dominique, I also enjoy this type of building. Obviously this one is still in use, probably as a workshop. These buildings are quiet old going back to the middle of the nineteenth century. You will find quite a few in the rural areas of Eastern Ontario. I photographed this cabin a few weeks ago in Ashton between Ottawa and Perth.

MINIMALIST ARCHITECTURE, MATTAWA, ON

Dominique thinks that the Champlain Theatre building is a sample of minimalist architecture. Of course he is right but how about this old abandoned log house, which could be classified  not as minimal but rather as functional architecture.

CHAMPLAIN THEATRE, MATTAWA, ON

Mattawa is one of the few communities, which still has a working movie theatre. Most of the small theatres have been either closed or converted to some other use like, very often religious, radio stations. it is nice to see a place like this  making a go of it.

MORE ICE FOLLIES

Another example of an art work on the ice of Lake Nipissing. This is actually a well constructed piece and I would think would make a very nice ice fishing hut. Yes it is a great shelter because inside the walls are constructed of thin sheets of plexiglass. Dave wonderd if I had removed any fishing huts and snow mobiles from the background. No I did not. The lake at this part of the waterfront is remarkably freeof huts. It aws also too cold for people to race around on the lake on their snowmobiles.

ICE FOLLIES 2010, NORTH BAY,ON

This year the W.P Kennedy gallery is again hosting the bi annual group show on Lake Nipissing. It was very cold this afternoon when I went out to see the various artworks. Even though there are some interesting pieces I was a little disappointed. To me it seems that many of the artwork lacked the element of surprise, as if you had seen it all in earlier shows, but there are a few exceptions like this piece which worked very nicely on the great expance of the empty space of the lake.

ABANDONED HOSPITAL, MATTAWA, ON

The town of Mattawa recently built a new hospital. So together with my friends Rob and Bob we decided on a little excursion to see if we could get some interesting images from the soon to be demolished old hospital, which dates from 1902. So here is my first image from this trip. Looking at this building you can see that a new hospital was without a doubt not a luxury.

STORE INTERIOR

The General store in Ashton sells a variety of merchandise besides some grocery staples. I guess that the store caters to the tourists visiting the area. I think that the building has not changed much over time.

GENERAL STORE, ASHTON, ON

Just returned from the Ottawa area. had a wonderful weekend with lots of good company, conversation and of course great food and drinks. We also went to Perth and on the way came through the tiny village of Ashton. A great place with some very interesting buildings. I definitely am planning to go back later this Spring to spend some time exploring Ashton. This general store was built in 1851, for those of you who like that information. Tomorrow I'll post an interior view.

WINTER GARDEN

Today just a simple view of a shrub stripped to its elemental but very graphic view. I think we overlook the beauty of a Winter garden because of its lack of colour and exuberance of growth. I will be away for a few days but hope to post again after the weekend. Its Winterlude in Ottawa and a great time to visit that city.

ANOTHER VIEW

Thanks for your posting Lydia. Here is another view of the gouse with the Olympic snow sculpture. It looks like a big mess but I guess the owner likes it that way.

CASSELLS STREET, NORTH BAY, ON

I guess somebody is looking forward to the Winter Olympics.I hope the neighbours are just as excited about the games.
